X-RATED AWARD (Best Slackness Tune): There was a lot of slackness in the Dance this year, but when we stopped to pick the Best Slackness Tune, we noticed a trend: For all of the slackness, there were very few “pure” slackness tunes. Most DJs in ‘03 voiced some sort of hybrid, bastardized slackness – one part pum pum lust, one part anti- chi-chi man lyrics, and one part anti-bow cat sentiment. Since we don’t like our slackness weighed down by negativity, we chose Bounty Killa’s SADDA DEM as the best of this year’s pornography. Honorable Mention: Chiney Ting, Stop Hitch and Bring Di Pussy Come – Elephant Man, Sweet To The Belly – Vybz Kartel, Pum Pum – Bounty Killa & Angel Doolas, We Wahh (Pussy) Spragga Benz & TOK, Boom Wuk – Cobra. |

BOOM BYE-BYE AWARD (Best Anti-Chi-Chi Man Tune): If you caught any live Buju Banton shows in JA this year, you know that the Best Anti-Chi-Chi Man Tune was Gargamel’s unreleased stage show invective where he DJs that “there is no end to the war between me & faggot.” Alas, to qualify for a Forward! you must have the balls to commit your misogyny to record, so NAH CLIMB, by Ward 21 & Vybz Kartel, is a worthy runner-up. DEM BOW AWARD (Best Anti-Bow Cat Tune): Even though Ce’Cile hilariously called them on their hypocrisy and fake machismo on “Give It To Me,” Dancehall DJs continued warring against oral sex with their customary passion. Wayne Marshall and Vybz Kartel made two hit songs on the topic, with WHY YOU DOING IT (pt. 1) winning the Forward! for its wide-eyed shock that anyone would want to bow. |
COUNTERACTION AWARD (Best Counteraction Tune): With all the dance moves dominating the dance this year, and Bounty’s focus on matters of the flesh, the sacred art of counteraction suffered greatly. The only conteractions that made any noise in ‘03 were actually released a year earlier: Bounty Killa’s Look Good, Likkle Dread Bwoy and Warlord Nuh Business collectively win this Forward! by default. GUN PON TEETH AWARD (Best Badman/ Shotta Tune): We cheated on this one. With so many testosterone-drenched 45s this year we were having a hard time picking our fav badman tune. Luckily, VP Records helped us out by releasing BADMAN SURPRISE, featuring Spragga Benz, Bounty Killa, Assassin and Cobra. “Badman Surprise” was actually a spliced-up mix of some seriously lethal individual badman tunes, anchored by Spragga’s rhetorical question “You mussi tink say man a fool... pussy?” It counts as one song though (check Reggae Gold 2003), so we get to have our cake and eat it too. PUTTING UP A RESISTANCE AWARD (Best Sufferer’s Anthem): The Poor People’s Governor voiced the wickedest Sufferer’s Anthem of the year with the aptly named SUFFERAH, easily the best tune on Lenky’s massive Diwali rhythm. Go back and listen to Bounty’s lyrics one more time. JUST REALITY AWARD (Best Reality Tune): Actually released in mid-2002, this tune didn’t get it’s just due in the Dancehall until late that year and early 2003. Even with a bunch of legitimate ‘03 contenders, Bounty Killa’s OUTCRY was an easy choice as the year’s Best Reality Tune. |
